Fiddler On The Roof, by Bock, Stein and Harnick remains in the top ten most successful musicals of all time, and having known several revivals (most recently a 2015 Broadway Production) it is currently in performance at The Menier Chocolate Factory in London.
The original production won eight Tony Awards and the film version several Oscar nominations.
Tackling issues of social progress and revolution, alongside family ties, religious customs, gender inequality and community displacement, the themes are still relevant today and particularly resonant in the context of the #MeToo movement, the Anti-Semetism row in British politics and the ongoing migrant crisis around the globe.
Pupils from Haileybury take the opportunity to explore these issues through the fabulous songs and stories of Tevye the Dairyman and his five daughters, during the turbulent times of pre-revolution Russia
This process is made all the more exciting by the fact we will be making our debut appearance at Hertford Theatre, providing our students the chance to perform on stage to the 400 seat auditorium of this professional ‘receiving-house’ theatre.
We are greatly indebted to the generosity of the Lyle Foundation whose generous donation paved the way for this exciting project.
We hope you will support this ambitious project and look forward to seeing you at Hertford Theatre to celebrate a wonderful step forward for Drama at Haileybury and join the cast in toasting: L’Chaim… To Life!
